George Latimer

George Latimer’s case became a big political issues in the state of Massachusetts.Born July 4, 1819 George Latimer was the son a a white man (his uncle owned his mother) and a black woman named Margaret Olmsted. He was owned by Edward Malley until he was 16, and spent time in prison because his master was in debt.He then was sold to James B. Gray who was known to beat George horribly for no reason. That is believed to be what caused him to run.He might of also been running for his family’s sake, as he had just married and his wife was pregnant. They hid beneath the deck of a ship that was going to Baltimore and from there traveled to Philadelphia.Because George had light skin, hisĀ  wife posed as his servant and they made it to Boston.Sadly, on the day they arrived, George was recognized by a man named William R. Carpenter, who happened to be an employer of Edward Malley. George latimer was arested and the black community tried to rescue him. Unfortunately they did not suceed. The case sparked so much uproar that Boston became one of the most violent places in America. The case is long and complicated so I will not go into the details, but eventually George Latimer’s freedom was purchased for $400 . He was still involved in the abolitionist cause and even helped a escaped slave named Scradach Minkins. Not much is no own about the rest if his life. His first child was born shortly after his freedom was purchased.
